FAQ
In fact, an expresso can be distinguished by its rich aroma and the creamy foam on the surface of the cup.
This requires a pressure of 15 bar (achieved only by espresso machines), water heated to 90-92°C and finely ground and measured coffee (7 g per cup).
We recommend using the descaling product provided by the manufacturer.
For a daily average usage of 4 cups and if the water is hard, we recommend descaling your machine at least every 3 months.
If you live in an area where the water is very hard, you may wish to descale more often.
In the case of a manual machine, you are the one controling the amount of water suitable for your drink. The machine does not stop by itself and stops when you move the selection lever back to the middle position.
In the case of an automatic machine, you choose in advance the amount of water that will be delivered. The machine will stop by itself automatically.
To prolong the life of your machine, it is recommended to use the descaling kit sold on our webshop or other liquid descaling kit suitable for coffee machines.
What we can advise is that consumers can make 5-6 coffees in a row, but then they need to wait for a moment (1-2 minutes should be enough) before resuming extracting.
Clean it with water and/or cleaning products recommended by the device manufacturer.
This can prevent clogging in the water outlet and hygiene issues.
When you select a small or large cup, the pump makes a lot of noise but no drops come out.
- Remove the capsule if there is one.
- Fill the tank to the maximum with hot water (60°C).
- Turn on the machine and select the large cup.
- Take out and reposition the tank every 3 seconds. There should be air bubbles escaping from the tank valve.
- The priming is done and the water flows through the coffee outlet.
If priming is not possible after these manipulations, take the appliance to an authorized service center.
Verify that the drip-tray is correctly positioned.
Consult the user manual and follow the instructions for cleaning.
Do not use refrigerated or warm water as this might impact the temperature of the beverage.
Use always fresh water and replace the water if system has not been used for more than 2 days.
For cold beverages, use water at ambient temperature, never refrigerated water, and place two or more ice cubes (20g per ice cube) in the cup.
To be noticed that water hardness is the first reason of machine calcification and so it is recommended to descale the machine frequently (every 3months or less according to water hardness).
Over time, limescale slows the flow of water through your machine and can reduce the effectiveness of the heating element making your beverage less warm.
For medium hardness water, descaling every 3/4 months gets rid of limescale build up, keeping waterflow fast and beverage temperature within expectations.
On some models (Jovia, Oblo, Drop, Stelia, Movenza, Eclipse, Piccolo produced since end 2014) there is a descaling reminder.
Each time the consumer touches the Hot or Cold button, it is considered as an extraction. Descaling warning is based on the number of extractions and it is triggered every 300 extractions by a orange ligthing of the ON/OFF button. Machine still works but we recommend to descale it.
It is strongly recommended to descale in the following three cases:
• If you find a lower flow of water when preparing drinks.
• If the water seems colder than usual.
• If the ON/OFF button turns orange continuously.
You can check whether it is from the water tank by pouring the water tank with water and keeping it on a table for a while (at least 30 mn). if it does not leak, it means that it is more related to the tightness of a water tube and in this case we recommend you to contact our consumer services center.
• When the machine is ready, the on/off button turns green.
• At the end of the preparation of the drink, the on/off button flashes red for about 5 seconds. Do not remove the capsule holder during this time!
• Eco Mode: after 5 minutes of non-use, the machine switches off automatically.
• If the on/off button flashes red/green, it means that machine has detected a lack of water. Check that the capsule is not blocked and that there is enough water in the tank before starting a new preparation.
• If the on/off button turns orange/yellow continuously (descaling warning), you should descale the machine.
For more details about the LEDs on your machine, please refer to the user manual of the machine.
If the consumers want a hotter coffee, they have several possibilities:
• Preheat the cup.
• Ensure that you always wait until the machine stops blinking during preheat of thermoblock before starting a preparation.
• Extract some water without capsule, throw the water away and proceed with the capsule afterwards.
• Descale the machine if needed (if a decrease of beverage temperature was noticed recently).
Normal temperature in cup:
• Capsules with roast and ground coffee: above 70 °C
• Capsules with soluble products: above 65 °C
To help you, here are a few lines the steps for optimal use:
1. Fill the water tank of the machine.
2. Make sure to snap the water tank in the machine.
3. Turn on your machine and wait until the LED is "green".
4. It is necessary to purge the machine before its first use. To do this, select on the head the maximum amount of water from the machine, drop an empty container under the head of the machine and press the Cold Water position (blue button) and wait for the end of the stream. Repeat the process on the hot water position (red button). Your machine is then ready for use.
5. Fill up your water tank.
6. Add a capsule in the capsule holder.
7. Choose the appropriate water level (the amount of water is specified on each adapted beverage capsule).
8. Select Hot/Cold water depending on your drink.
9. Then wait until the LED is "green" to remove your capsule safely.
10. Throw your capsule away.
The coffee that is used in the capsules is made mainly of premium Arabica varieties.
The capsules are designed to deliver an even distribution of water and pressure over the coffee to ensure that flavour is maximized. This system uses pressure similar to that of professional machines.
Whilst coffee percolators operate at one bar of pressure (normal atmospheric pressure) and a number of other machines operate at no more than two bars, the NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto system can operate up to 15 bars.
To use your machine safely:
• Never put hot water in the water tank!
• Never open the locking handle during the preparation of a drink!
• At the end of the preparation, the ON/OFF button flashes red for about 5 seconds. Do not open the handle during this time!
• Never move the selector lever while the locking handle is open!
• Do not touch the capsule after the preparation of the drink! Hot surfaces can cause burns!
On new models, the needle can actually be removed and the main purpose is to allow consumers to clean the needle specially when it is clogged or the flow starts to decrease. This cleaning must be followed by a full descaling of the machine.
Each time the consumer touches the Hot or Cold button, it is considered as an extraction. Descaling warning is based on the number of extractions and it is triggered every 300 extractions by a orange ligthing of the ON/OFF button. Machine still works but we recommend to descale it.
Switch off the machine, press the power button for 5s until the power button starts blinking and the descaling mode is activated. Machine can be descaled according to the user manual available in the machine care page.
To be noticed that if the descaling mode is activated and the machine is switched off without doing the descaling, the power button will turn back to green and the counter is reset. After 300 new extractions, power button will again turn to orange.
It ensures the safety of consumers that is so important to the brand of Modern Art Café: NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto®.
If you hear the pump but there is no flow, follow the different steps:
1-Remove the capsule from capsule holder.
2-Check that there is water in water tank and that water tank is well plugged.
3-Select the cold channel, lift and put down the water tank several times and then fix it, flow should start. If not, the needle is probably clogged.
The needle must be cleaned with the cleaning tool provided with the machine and machine must be descaled.
If your machine is equipped with a removable needle (part in green), you can remove it to clean it deeply.
If after this, there is still no flow, machine must be sent to a repair centre.
However limescale build-up is not likely to happen in Cold circuit and it is very important that the majority of the descaling solution goes through the Hot channel. In order to ensure an efficient descaling of Hot channel (that is the most use), we recommend to pass the entire solution in Hot channel.
In order to have a perfect rinsing, and to avoid remaining drops of descaling solution in the connector collecting both Hot and Cold tubes, it is recommended to rinse Cold channel as well.
For medium hardness water, descaling every 3/4 months gets rid of limescale build up, keeping waterflow fast and beverage temperature within expectations.
The machine need to be repaired.
To close the capsule holder correctly, make sure you press the lid twice. The lid will then fall slightly underneath the closure of the capsule holder. Pressing the lid twice will ensure that the injector is properly inserted into the coffee cup. This allows the coffee and milk to flow through smoothly. When the lid is only pushed once, it looks like the capsule holder is seamlessly closed, but the capsule holder is still not closed correctly.
See images below
Press lid of the capsule holder once: almost seamlessly closed.

Press lid of the capsule holder twice: there is a little edge.

If the above does not work, the capsule holder is probably leaking because the injector and the water tube no longer fit together perfectly.
The machine needs to be repaired.

If you live in an area where the water is very hard, you may wish to descale more often.
Although coffee grounds in your cup are harmless, this does not give the best coffee experience and we do not recommend drinking the cup of coffee. We recommend placing a container under the coffee outlet and press the Lungo button (no capsule) to rinse any coffee grounds from the inside of the brewing unit, then brew a new cup of coffee with a new capsule.
Paper capsules do not interact with the machine in the same way as aluminum capsules. It takes slightly longer for the machine to pierce the paper capsule, and sometimes a very small amount of water may flow around the capsule and into the cup. A few water drops should not affect the taste or aroma of your coffee.
Clean it with water and/or cleaning products recommended by the device manufacturer.

The presence of mould in the capsule bin does not affect the preparation of cups of coffee.
1. Your cup must not be flared out.
2. Your cup must be at least 7cm in diameter.
3. Always use a minimum of 80ml of milk.
4. The quantity of milk must never fill more than half of your cup.

As with any organic food matter, there is a risk of mould developing. How long this may take depends on the temperature and humidity levels of the environment in which the capsules are stored. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that the capsules are safe to use beyond four weeks after opening the sachet.

Sometimes a foreign body finds its way into the grinder. In this case, empty the coffee bean container and vacuum out the interior near the grinder.
We recommend using good quality coffee beans to preserve the life of the integrated grinding wheels of the coffee grinder.
If your machine still makes an abnormal noise, we invite you to contact our customer service.
If you use the wrong coffee, remove it and refill with the correct type.
The machine is equipped with a cleaning programme and automatically alerts you when it is necessary, depending on several parameters: your consumption, the water hardness setting, etc.
We recommend that you clean the machine as soon as it displays the alert and that you use the tablets whose dosage has been perfectly adapted and tested by our teams to act effectively, without any risk of aggression or damage to the machine's internal components.
Heat the cups by rinsing them in hot water to avoid creating "thermal shock" with cold cups.
The coffee quality obtained will be even better.
The drip tray is used to catch any water or coffee that spills out of the machine during and after brewing. It is important to always leave it in place and to empty it regularly. For hygienic purposes, we recommend that you remove the drip tray to clean it daily and let it air dry before putting it back in the machine.
When the floats are in the upper position, this indicates an overflow. It is then necessary to empty the drip tray.
Coffee grounds collector
The coffee grounds collector receives the extracted coffee grounds.
For hygienic reasons, we recommend that you clean the coffee grounds collector under hot soapy water every day and let it air dry before putting it back in the machine.
When it is necessary to empty the coffee grounds collector, the machine will indicate this.
You can empty it more regularly, but when the machine is switched on, put the collector back in so that the machine can record that it has been emptied.
Important:
• Not emptying the coffee grounds collector regularly as described above can damage your machine.
• Do not put the collector in the dishwasher.
Water tank
To preserve the aroma of your coffee and for hygienic reasons, we recommend that you use fresh water, clean the tank daily with hot water and a sponge, and let it air dry before putting it back on the machine.
Coffee bean container
Coffee beans can leave a greasy residue on the sides of the container, which can affect the quality of your coffee. To preserve its aroma and for hygienic reasons, we recommend that you wipe it with a clean, soft, dry cloth each time it needs to be filled.
Important: Do not use water to clean the bean container, the presence of water in the container could damage your machine.
Auto-Cappuccino Accessory
If it is not rinsed after each use, the milk can clog the circuit and thus affect the performance of your coffee machine.
We advise you, after each milk recipe, to perform the automatic rinse and manually rinse the milk connector.
Check for coffee beans in the bean container and make sure the coffee bean sensor is not blocked or dirty. If necessary, clean with a dry cloth. Do not use wet or oily beans.
Select a recipe in the favourites menu and/or reduce the amount of water.
Run one or several rinsing cycles.
Verify that the drip-tray is correctly positioned.
We recommend that you descale as soon as the machine displays the alert and that you use the descaling product whose dosage has been perfectly adapted and tested by our teams to act effectively against limescale and scale, without any risk of aggression or damage to the machine's internal components.
It is not necessary to descale apart from warning messages.
- Check that the coffee bean container has coffee in it and that it is dispensing correctly.
- Avoid using oily, caramelised or flavoured coffee.
- Make the drink in two cycles by using the 2 cups function.
- Adjust the fineness of ground coffee by turning the adjustment knob located in the coffee bean container.
According to model:
This construction allows the coffee circuit to be rinsed under pressure and automatically drained after each cup: the guarantee of perfect hygiene.
This unique system :
- Ensures that there is no water residue inside the machine, limiting scaling and ensuring long-lasting performance. After each use, you can see that there is residual water in the drip tray, which is linked to this automatic rinsing/draining.
- Reduces the need for cleaning and maintenance to a minimum, giving you the pleasure of coffee without the hassle.
It is therefore normal not to receive alerts if your steam/hot water consumption is low.
It is not necessary to descale apart from the machine alerts.
Regular descaling of your machine will preserve the proper functioning of your machine and ensure its longevity by eliminating all deposits of limescale or scale in all circuits that are in regular contact with water and susceptible to scaling.
All of our machines are equipped with an alert feature that lets you know when to descale.
To determine the hardness of your water, (0 = very soft, 1 = soft, 2 = slightly hard, 3 = hard, 4 = very hard) dip one of the paper test strips provided with your device into your water for one second, then wait 1 minute for the result or contact your water provider. You can also contact your town hall to get this information.
If the water level in the drip tray is full (you should empty it after each coffee), clean and replace it.
Unplug the machine for 20 seconds.
If cleaning is postponed, the warning message will remain on the display until the operation is performed.
Your espresso machine is equipped with a counter and automatically alerts you when descaling is necessary after a certain number of steam/hot water brews and according to several parameters: your consumption, the water hardness setting...
Increase if necessary.
The temperature can be set for each recipe in the favorites menu.
If necessary, heat the cup or glass before use.
This setting should be applied during grinding and notch by notch (you can hear the noise of the grinder before the coffee starts to flow).

According to model:

• There is no water in the tank; fill the tank,
• Your tank is not correctly installed; press firmly on the tank,
• The filter is blocked; the ground coffee is too fine. Clean the filter holder and try a less finely ground coffee,
• The pump is unprimed; refer to the instructions on how to prime it,
• Your appliance has scaled up; descale it,
• The Claris filter cartridge has been changed but not primed; refer to the instructions on how to prime it.
• Use some descaling solution diluted in half a litre of water or use 25cl of white vinegar in half a litre of water.
• Pour the solution into the water tank (without coffee),

• Start the cycle (without any coffee). After 2 minutes, stop the cycle manually. Leave the coffee maker for an hour,

• Restart the coffee maker to finish the cycle,

• To rinse the machine, run 2 cycles with water but without coffee.

Repeat the complete descaling operation, if necessary.
• The ground coffee is too fine ('Espresso' type ground coffee).
• If you use a permanent filter, do not use a paper filter as well.
• Certain types of paper filter (to make full-bodied coffees) can prolong the time in which it takes for the water to pass through the filter and ultimately cause the water to overflow.
